Metatarsalgia
Metatarsalgia is a foot disorder of the metatarsal area of the foot, better known as the ball of the foot, located just before the toes. It typically affects the bones and joints in the metatarsal area resulting in acute pain which might be recurrent or chronic. The condition is caused by excessive pressure over an extended period of time on one or more metatarsal heads which become painfully inflamed. Metatarsalgia is most often caused by ill-fitting footwear, typically women’s restrictive footwear and dress shoes. Other causes are high impact activities without orthotics of proper footwear. Older people are also prone to this condition caused because the foot pads tend to thin out with age making the balls of the feet more susceptible.
The first step in treatment is proper diagnosis. If improper or ill-fitting footwear is the cause this should be changed. The pressure on the balls of the feet can be relieved with the use of a range of foot care products. Metatarsal pads, for example, relieve pressure by redistributing weight from the affected area offering relief. Other podiatric aids which offer relief are gel metatarsal cushions and bandages. If you still experience pain, then visit your podiatrist.
Metatarsalgia is a familiar condition to the podiatrists at Foot and Ankle Associates of Los Gatos, Ca, which is easily treatable.
