Charcot Foot
Charcot foot is foot condition which is difficult to recognize with misleading symptoms. It is a condition associated with people suffering from diabetes mellitus. A recent study indicated that 9 percent of diabetic neuropathy patients suffered from Charcot foot. Usually the first signs of the disease are a warmness of the whole foot or the affected part of the foot with some swelling and redness. There is no pain and the circulation is generally good. Then a small deformity will begin to appear with possibly a deep kind of aching pain. Early diagnosis is the best form of control. This might require immediate immobilization followed by a lifetime program of preventive care. Charcot foot is often misdiagnosed and improperly treated in which case it can deteriorate without significant pain. In the worst case scenario it could result in amputation. Lifelong care would entail routine foot care, wearing protective footwear and patient education. Charcot foot is best diagnosed by a trained podiatrist.
Because of the seriousness of the condition diabetic patients especially those suffering from diabetic neuropathy should have routine check-ups of their feet and legs. Foot and Ankle Associates of Los Gatos has trained podiatrists who are qualified to diagnose and treat diabetic and other foot conditions at an early stage.
